Fun with Oobleck!

Fun with Oobleck!

We had a great time observing the physical properties of a few unknown substances (water and corn starch) in order to create oobleck.

Math: in math we are still on unit 5. And by the way it is anything but a review unit! Honestly, once you get the concept, it is super easy again. Unfortunately, I don’t have the concept stuck in my head quite yet. I’m guessing the test is going to be Wednesday the 8th. Then we are going to start working on volume. Grrrr!

Science: in science we are working on energy. We have learned mostly about potential and kinetic energy. Potential energy is when you’re not moving and you are saving up energy. Kinetic energy is when you are moving and using up the potential energy.

Writing: in writing we are still writing MY BOOK. We are not even writing for that anymore. We are drawing pictures for it. I only have 2 pictures left. Also in writing, we are writing something that has never happened to us before. I’m writing a fantasy. My character isn’t myself it’s actually a dog [as of right now anyway]. I have actually tried to get this kind of book done in the past, but I never did. Now that it’s an assignment, I’m pretty sure it’s going to get done.

Reading: In reading my group is Maggie, Elly, Megan and myself. We are reading the book school of fear. At first I didn’t think I’d like the book but, now I’m really starting to like the book. Even though I only read six pages. My favorite part about the book is on every chapter there’s a word that’s some kind of phobia and it even tells what the phobia means!

Social studies: we are done with the china unit. At the end of it we picked out an adjective to describe ourselves. Then we painted in Chinese. My adjective was musical. We now started the mapping unit. I don’t like mapping very much. I used to like it but, when you do it for whole year it’s not as appealing.

Allieds: we finished up tech ed. We are now doing art. We finished our cave paintings and, now we are doing hieroglyphs.

Reader’s Workshop- We started reading groups again! This time, we are in the same group: The Girl That Could Fly. Of course, we aren’t the only ones in this group (These are the other people in our group: Cali, Kathryn, Ally, & Emily). While all the other groups found the perfect book, we were still searching for it. We came on bended knee to Mrs. Geldnich, who was glad to help in the treacherous task of finding a book that was interesting, and something that none of us had read. It took another day, however before the books were in our hands, for Mrs. Geldnich only had one copy, and the rest were located in P.L.E.

Social Studies (S.S) - In social studies we have concluded the Ancient China unit. Yet before saying good bye, we wrapped up the unit with a big bang. Our class took a turn, choosing and learning adjectives in Chinese. We were filled with knowledge, pronunciation, and symbols. Annika chose the words Crazy, and Fanatical while Janie taught the class.

Math (a.k.a Mental Abuse To Humans) - Recently we have been given, in ALEKS, a new report card. This is the final change of conferencing reports, and they will be carried with us throughout middle school and high school. The report is on Google Docs, and will be the final change of conferencing reports. Exponential 24 is now the new type of 24, a game that most of us play about half way through the class. Exponential 24 has us squaring, cubing, finding square roots, and finding cube roots.

Science – We have been extremely crafty in this class, inventing toys, alien repelling hats, and mixing up mysterious concoctions. We were partners in the alien repelling hat business, and our alien hat was quite the success. Covered in aluminum foil, pencils, and elastics, we topped it off with our amazing colored paperclips.

January blog
Math: although our math teacher was not here for three weeks we still learned how to solve really long equations. Also we did put fractions in to problems. Lastly we are we are comparing long problems and waiting` for Mrs. Robin to come back.

Language Arts: In writers workshop we started our illustrations for our books. Also in readers workshop we are in our book clubs and me and Jennifer are reading wolf brother. Lastly in spelling we are learning how to spell new words correctly.

Science: this month science was very fun because we did a lot of projects that were really fun. Like we made this green gooey stuff called ooblec it was really fun because we dipped our hands in it and stuff. Also made a toy that had to move a ping pong ball at least 5 inches and we had to explain the kinetic and potential energy. Lastly we made an alien hat to repel aliens and we had to explain our hypothesis, experiment and conclusion.

Social studies: we learned about ancient China. First we learned about Shinguandi and how he forced the people to build the Great Wall of China and if the people died they would be buried in the wall. It was interesting to learn about.

January By: Maggie & Cali

Language Arts- In language arts we got the final print of our books and we started illustrating all of our stories. We have to get completely illustrated in the next 2 weeks!!!!! We all have different stories and ideas some more random then others (mainly Emily). Aside from illustrating our books we are starting a creative writing piece that is our choice. You could write about a unicorn named Steve who eats flowers (Celina thanks to all of her hours watching Barbie…. and yes Celina we know). A dog who lives on the street( Thanks to my good friend Emma).

Math-
Maggie- In math we are starting of Pre Algebra. We are learning how to solve for x, or z, or any variable. We are also coming up on our test I think....... Yay I think. At least I think we're doing Pre Algebra that's what Mr. Fish told us.
Cali- We’re working on ALEKS…like always. But, we created a new conferencing report! This report we’ll use through high school. Also, I’m almost done with ALEKS!!!!

Social Studies-
We finished our Ancient China unit. We learned about the different dynasties, great emperors, and not so great emperors. Then, we made brochures to visit Shang Dynasty. We learned about confucius sayings and then interpreted what we thought it meant. Finally, we took the test and Maggie and I scored great!

Science-
Maggie- I’m learning about different forms of matter and energy. Also, the different kinds including mechanical, sound, light, ect. Two big ones we are learning about are potential and kinetic. Potential energy is when you have the potential to run, jump, or even fall. Kinetic energy is energy of motion. So, that is when you are actually running, jumping or falling.
Cali-I’m making a Photo Story and a Smart Board Notebook with Janie about sound energy. We asked questions about it and then got them answered. Based on the answers we made a Smart Board notebook about how sound energy works. Then, our Photo Story is what introduces them to in depth details about this energy and also about how you hear, why you can’t hear in space, how microphones work, and much more!
Together- We made oobleck to study chemical and physical reactions. Then we wrote about what we recorded.

Spelling-
We just ended our packet about numbers 5-10. (Now I know what nonagenarian means!) Also, we took our test and I got a good grade. In spelling we played Hangman to find out what our new spelling words are. We had words like SHARP, and some more that I can’t think of any more at this instant. We also did a spelling packet. Inside the contents of this packet is a whole page of commonly confused words that we have to write ourselves.

January By: Zach & Drew

Math:
In math we are learning about algebra. In algebra we are learning about variables and how to put them in equations.
In Drew’s math he is learning about Algebra 1 and finding slopes of a line with parallel and perpendicular lines. He is also learning about how solve a linear equation with several occurrences of the variable.

Language arts:
We were working on our response log. We were reading our library books to fill it out. We had to read our group book too. I read Phantoms in the Snow. Drew read The Son of Neptune. In writer’s workshop we’re making books about our lives, and are just finishing them.

Social Studies:
In social studies we were learning about ancient China. We also learned about Shihuangdi. He was a cruel emperor and only cared about himself. Another person we learned about was Confucius. He was a very wise man and you probably no a lot more of his sayings than you think.

Science:
In science we are learning about matter and energy. We made oobleck and learned how it changes from liquid state to solid state. We also had to make a toy machine that could move a ping pong ball five inches. We also learned about changes of state.

January By: Carlos & Noah

Math: In math Noah and I are learning about algebra and how to find the value of variable. In Noah’s math class Mr. Finn is the teacher. In my class Mr. Fish is our teacher because Mrs. Roben got surgery. I went to Hawaii and missed a week, but I got the missing work done.

Science: In science we are learned about energy and compounds. For compounds we made a green substance that was gooey and stuck to our hands. We got to keep some of it in a plastic bag. While we were learning about energy we had to make a toy car move a ball 5 inches with other items. My invention could make a ball move 5 yards and it hit Colin.

L.A.: In LA we got new book clubs. Our group members are Jack, Greg, Noah, Seth, Drew and Carlos (that’s me). We are reading a book called Half Moon Investigations. We have to read the whole book in 2 weeks.

SS: In social studies. We learned about Ancient China. We made ads for China convincing people to come and visit. Did you know that Shihuangdi was the person who invented the Great Wall of China? Many people died while making it.

January By: Joey & Matt

Math: in math Matt and Joey are learning about algebra and we started learning about exponents and variables. We have also been preparing for our big test. Math has been really fun but hard at the same time.

Science: has been really fun doing all the experiments. Like making the toys and the oobleck it was really fun to do. We have started learning about kinetic and potential energy that has also been fun.

Social studies: we have learned about ancient china and all of the emperors. We have just stared our new unit mapping were we have to map different places by using latitude and longitude. It has been really hard but I still like it.

Language arts: we have just started our group reading books and just finished our response logs. We also have been illustrating our books. It has been really fun especially that Joey and I are in the same group. We have also just started are creative writing piece and we almost we are books.

January By: Ben

This is a new year but not a new school year because it’s January.

In math we did equations with variables to solve the value of the variables, finished P.E.M.D.A.S and had a few quizzes, and had to do a few tables with a flat rate, and the test will come in the 2nd week of February.

In writers work shop we finished our 7 writing prompts and I also finished all of my illustrations, and started on our creative writing piece mine is about Yusie, Yugi, Yuma, Joey, and Kaiba vs. Jaden Yugi. In readers work shop I read 3 bock car children, and did about 6-10 responses. In language arts we did stuff with sentences, and did different dialects.

In science we did a physical and a chemical change and made oobleck with water and corn syrup then we added green food coloring to get green oobleck.

In social studies we did a china test and made a brochure to make people come to ancient china.

January By: Alex

Math: in math were working with fractions. I hated this unit because; one we had a bunch of homework. Plus it was very difficult at many points. We also did work on variable problems. I been struggling with variable and need some help.

Social studies: we started learning about ancient china. The first thing we learned about was dynasties. Also we learned about shihuangdi who was the first powerful emperor. I really enjoyed learning about china and I think I got a good grade.

Science: in science we made oobleck it was gross. We also made a poster about the cycle of water when it turns into a solid, gas, and liquid.
We also watched a video on energy.

La: we did a lot in language arts, I’m surprised I finished all my work. We made a story that’s going to get made into a book. Now we’re doing creative writing. My stories about what I’m going to do in summer.

January By: Elly

Math: I’m in Pre- Algebra. Mrs. Fulfer is my math teacher and she knows her stuff. Mrs. Fulfer is really good at teaching and at motivating. I have a new goal; my goal is to finish Pre- Algebra by the end of the year. I think that is a pretty reasonable goal. So Math I am doing pretty good for me, but not up to date, so I will also try to catch up to everyone else.

Social Studies: In S.S. we just finished our test and I got a final score as 99%. I think that is a good score for the amount of studying, I barley studied at all! But, I did my best. This unit was fun, it really connected with peace and all of the calming things about the world. It really made me motivated when we learned about the Confucius quotes. Those quotes were really inspiring. One of them was ‘Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting back up when we do’. That meant to me that when in your life you get a big put down or something bad happens, then look at it in a good way or at least do something to make it work.

Reader’s Workshop: In readers workshop we started new reading groups there are 6 books. Al Capone, Point Blank, Wolf Brother’s, The Girl Who Could Fly, Half Moon Investigations, and my book, School of Fear. I’m in a group with Maggie, Megan, and Charlene. Our book is so far pretty good, it’s about 4 kids that all have fears and go to this mysterious school that helps them get rid of their fears. Except one of the kids is afraid of dying so I don’t know how he’ll get over it.

Writer’s Workshop: We are working on our books. Our books are just seven stories that we write and 8 pictures that we draw to go along with our pictures. I can’t wait to get them published and I can’t wait to see how good or bad my pictures are. Otherwise along the way we are having L.A. and we are learning about anything that we could add to our other stories. We also are starting our creative writing pieces. They are a made up fantasy story that we will grade and read. But, I can’t tell you what mine is about otherwise it wouldn’t be a secret.

Science: We made our oobleck and started our energy unit. Now we are learning about potential and kinetic energy. Potential is stored energy and Kinetic is moving energy. Otherwise it’s pretty boring, I have to admit it.

Tech Ed: We finished Tech. Ed. And we are all sad. Well, I am and I don’t know for sure that everybody did, but I miss it already.

Art: We started art and we just finish our final first piece. That show’s how quickly we are moving. Now we are on Hieroglyphics project. It’s pretty intense. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

January By: Celina

Math- Math in January was very difficult for me. I might have not been able to understand d as much was because of the substitute. I’m very use to Mrs. Roben teaching our math but she got surgery and she was out sick for 3 weeks! I’m looking forward to Mrs. Roben coming back and explaining what we did.

Science- I really liked science in January. We got to make alien hats, make toys, etc. My favorite part in science is when we do fun things like that. I wish we can do more fun things like that.

Social Studies- We were learning about Ancient China. Who we learned about was Shihuangdi, Wudi, Confusious, Fu Hao, and Han Gazoa. I very much enjoy Social Studies because of all the things we do in there like science.

Language Arts- We are doing illustrations and making a book. It’s about what your favorite stuff. Many different topics. In readers workshop we are just reading and doing our readers log

January By: J.B.

In math we have finished P.E.M.D.A.S and have took two quizzes. We finished algebra and we did graphs and equations and how to solve them. We have done tables with flat rate. We are going to take a test on these soon.

In spelling we have learned about compound words, commonly confused words. We have got 15 new and old words. We have still been doing fix it and add it. We have had to do combining to sentences to one.

In reader’s workshop we have finished our book the always war. Then we read independently for a while. Now we are starting group books again and our group is JB, Alex, Zach, and Jacob. Our book is Point Black.

In writer’s workshop we have finished typing and are almost done with illustrations. We have started a creative writing piece.

In science we did chemical and physical change. We made this mystery stuff at first, then Mrs. Fulfer told us what it was, it was corn starch and water, but we put in green food coloring. The stuff we made was called oobleck. We had to make an alien hat to repel aliens because Mrs. Carter is afraid of aliens. I made a hat with Joey. Our hat worked because with aluminum foil, flashlight, pencil, and spit balls. We killed them by making ourselves look like them with the alum. foil, then we blinded them with a strobe light flashlight. Then we poked them in the eye with the pencils. Then they screamed and we shot the spit ball down there throat to die. We have started energy and made a toy car move.

We have recently finished china and started the mapping unit. In China we made a pamphlet to encourage people to come to Ancient China. We took the test and now we are starting the mapping unit.

January By: Kathryn & Mikayla

Math-
We plugged in variables to represent #s. We also solved and simplified equations with and without variables. One other thing we worked on was order of operations. To help us remember the order of operations, we were taught an acronym. PEMDAS stands for:
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction

Social Studies-
To start the month, we moved on to our next section in S.S. which was Ancient China. We learned about the Great Wall, Dynasties, Rulers (Emperors), and quite a bit more. The entire class ended up agreeing that the first emperor of china was really mean! His name was Shihuangdi. Shihuangdi even killed his own son! Mikayla and I both did well on our SS tests on Ancient China.

Lang. Arts-
Throughout January we continued to work on our, “My Books.” We’ve finally finished up our writing, and have been able to move on to our illustrations. In Readers Workshop we’ve still been independently reading and answering prompts in our Reader’s Response Log. Now, in February we started new reading groups and books.

Science-
In science we made a type off slime. But Mrs. Fulfer gave it a name. So she named it ooblek . We mixed corn starch, water, and green food coloring to make the ooblek. We are still working on our matter and energy topic. But, we just started learning different types of energy at the end of January, we are still working on that though.

January By: Megan

In math during January, we were working on ALEKS. ALEKS is a program where we can work on our own at our own pace. We also play a game called 24. When we play it, it gets intense. If we get the answer right, we get CANDY! I know, pretty sweet. Anyways, in order to get the candy, we need to make the 4 numbers given to us equal 24. We can use multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Also, we learned a new version when we use square root, cubed root, squaring, and cubing.

In social studies, we just wrapped up our unit on Ancient China. We learned about the Shang, Qin, and Han dynasty. For the Shang dynasty, we made an advertisement to convince someone to come to Ancient Shang. Also, we did our unit on Ancient India and Mesopotamia. For Mesopotamia, we mapped out Mohenjo-Daro including paved roads, manholes(sewers), and a citadel.

In science, we are doing our Matter and Energy unit. It is pretty interesting, because we are learning about things that we wouldn’t learn watching TV. We also made oobleck, a ‘liquid’ that consisted of corn starch and water. It felt really weird, because it made almost a slime. But, then it hardened up a bit, and it was more like rubber.

In writers’ workshop, we are just finishing up our illustrations for our books. Now, we are starting our creative writing pieces. We had to do some prewriting before we started, and then we did our 5 senses throughout the piece. In readers’ workshop, we are just starting some new book clubs. I am reading the School of Fear with Maggie, Charlene, and Elly.

In art, we are just starting. We have already finished our Cave Paintings, when we draw bulls, horses, and reindeer with yellow, orange, and red crayons. Then, we colored the background. After that, we crumpled up the paper and then tore the edges. It turned out really cool! Now, we are starting our Egyptian Hieroglyphics when we write our names in Hieroglyphs. Then, we are supposed to color around our pictures with metallic colored pencils on black construction paper.

January By: Colin

In social studies- So far we ended learning about ancient china. It is a pretty cool place actually even know you picture it being bad. The things we have learned is that there are three major dynasties. They are the Shi, Han, and Confucius. Speaking of Confucius he is a really good person. He helped a lot of people succeed in life.

In L.A.- We have been learning about homographs and homophones. These words can be confusing to some people. Also we have been learning about punctuation. This is very important in life because otherwise you would be saying and writing every sentence wrong. And we have started to illustrate our books.

In Math- In math we have been learning about the greater than, greater than or equal to, less than, less than or equal to, and non-equal. We have learned many interesting ways to remember these symbols. Also we have learned how to divide and multiply algebraic expressions.

In Science- In this subject we have learned the difference between physical and chemical changes. Later on in last quarter we did a project on to make a hat to keep aliens away. I worked on my hat with friend Matt. We used tinfoil, starbursts, glasses, an pens. This was a very funny project and also fun!
