We are Published Authors!!

Students put a ton of effort into their student books this year. They were very excited when the books finally arrived! We took some time to celebrate and check out everyone's stories.

Science By: Zach & Seth

This month we are learning about space in science. We have learned about how the earth is on a tilt and that this is what causes the seasons, how the moon orbits earth, and how galaxies and stars are classified. We thought that one of the most interesting topics was how the surface of the moon came to be. We learned that the dark spots on the moon were called mare, because it was originally thought to be water on the moon, but we learned it was actually a dark lava rock called basalt. We also learned that the craters are called impact craters, which are little explosions that happen when a small body from space hits a larger body at fast speeds.
We are taking our test today. The unit test will include everything we have learned this month. This is anything from the phases of the moon to the stage our sun is in for the star cycle. We finished our study on Tuesday, and hopefully we have all been studying hard. Wish us luck.

Math (ALEKS): By: Drew & Jacob

The ALEKS math program is an outstanding program. Students are learning better and faster than ever. Students can learn at own pace. For example, if a student doesn’t understand a problem, there is no set schedule to move on to something else, so they are allowed time to learn it. Another example is if a student already knows the problem, no class time is wasted on teaching it to them again.
Most people are currently wrapping up their pre-algebra course. Currently, I, (Drew,) am finishing my Algebra 1 course. Jacob is almost done with his Pre-Algebra.
If students are ever stuck on a question, they can always ask their teacher for help. We also take progress assessments to see which topics we have truly mastered. If we didn’t truly master them, we are required to do them again.
Jacob and I are enjoying our math class for the first time and are excited to continue it next year!

Math (Expressions) By: Jenni

Hi, my name is Jenni. I’m in Mrs.Robens expressions math class. We are working on different types of graphs right now. Our last unit was converting customary units of liquid volume and finding a percent of number. We had to figure out the answer to complicated math problems.
We just took our test and did very well. Our next unit is different types of graphs. Such as dot plots and histographs. Next we will work on drawing models to unlevel data. The graph unit right now is easy but I’m sure that it will get harder. And that’s what we are doing in the math expressions class right now.

Language Arts By: Annika & Celina

Writers Workshop
Recently we took a trip into the (sometimes) creative minds of the class. We were allowed to pair up, and create a Greek god/goddess, along with a myth involving them. Emily and Annika paired up, while Celina seeked out Mikayla in her partnership. After editing and revising the pieces, we drew a picture of a scene in the story. The pictures are now posted in the back of the classroom on the bulletin board. Currently we have been learning about poems, and created a poem about what we have learned. From the fact that that punting a soccer ball at the ceiling can break the lights, to the fact that broccoli is better than brussels sprouts, the ideas were funny, and thought-provoking.

Readers Workshop
After writers workshop, we have been creating a power-point that resembles facebook. After presenting we are back on track, learning about more tactics, to help you connect with the books you read.

Allieds By: Noah & Matt

This quarter we are in health and we have been learning new things every time we go. Like to how to take care of your body and not to get into bad habits. It has been very interesting learning about how to take care and not do bad things like drugs, smoking, alcohol, and balancing our health pyramid. Although we haven’t learned much because we have only done 4 classes so far.
Surprisingly we have made our first project though we will present it soon. Although we haven’t learned much yet we are excited to learn more and get help balancing our health pyramids.

Soccer-
So far the girl’s soccer team has won 2 of their games. Since their original coach, Tim Jones, had to leave because of family reasons, Coach Seib has decided to coach us. Megan, Annika, Cali, Maggie, Emily and Celina are all on the soccer team. We are in a tournament in Madison over Spring Break, so hopefully we’ll bring back a trophy!

Basketball- In rec, the Gators won the championship against the Golden Eagles. They got first place in the Opie tournament. Celina was the only girl from our class on the Gators team. For select, the Girl’s Select Black team got 17th in State. The Select Red team won 4 of their games.

Volleyball-Jenny and Cali are on the Pewaukee 6th Grade Black Team. We entered a tournament and came in third place which is super good with how many teams joined in. We hope to have good luck in our next tournaments. Emma practices with the Brookfield Central Lancers. “They are doing well.” Emma states.

Jazz Lab-Save the Drama for Your Llama! Jazz lab members are raking in the llama points and playing musically very well. Our two songs are In the Mode and Let’s Go Band! (Or in Jazz Lab, Let’s Go Llamas!) We can’t wait to open for the 6th grade spring concert.

Musical Instruments-
1) Piano- Janie auditioned for a State Competition and has been accepted for the completion in May. Janie played Fantasia in D Minor, Spinning Song, and 3 Part Invention. Good luck Janie!
2) Honors Band- Jenny, Megan, Elly, and Charlene are auditioning for Honors Band. Megan is playing Simple Gifts; Annika, Jenny, and Ellly are playing Nocturne; and Charlene Steal Away. They also have to play G, C, and E Major scales as well as play the chromatic scale.

Jack had surgery on his right leg and was out for 6 weeks and on crutches for a week. The boys black team got 9th place in the State Tournament.

Soccer

Joey, Greg, Ben, Jacob, J.B, and Alex all play soccer. Greg, Joey, J.B, Ben, and Jacob all play indoor soccer. Joey’s team doesn’t have a very good soccer team (he said) because they always lose. J.B. says that he has a good soccer team because they won three and lost two. Greg says that his team is somewhat good. They play indoor soccer at Indoor Soccer in Brookfield. The indoor soccer games are almost over then it’s time to play outdoor soccer.

Baseball
Joey, Seth, Carlos, Noah, Ben, Zach, Jacob, Colin, and Drew all play baseball. But only Colin and Zach play select baseball. On Zach and Colin’s baseball team are Nathan Burke, Jacob Sklenar, Bayne Basche, Jack Doubeck, Ricky Glowe, Ian Patowski, Ryan Wagner, and Josh Swanson. Zach and Colin say that their team is somewhat good. Their team plays at Balmer Park.

A lot of students think that 12:53 is too late to have lunch. We did a survey, with answers ranging from 11:30 – 12:30. Most responses were either 11:30 or 12:00. Most students are very hungry when lunch time comes around. This can be a good thing, but many of the students do not like this arrangement. Also, students would like recess after the lunch time, similar to how it is now.
Allieds-FACE, Tech-Ed, Art, and Health-often let students go between 12:50 -12:55 to go to lunch. Some students think the teachers should let us go to lunch sooner, and some students think that we should move allieds after lunch and recess.
Specials (Spanish, Gym) are usually near the end of the day. For example, Gym is at either 3:00 - 3:30 or 2:30 – 3:00. But, we want time for extra recess or resource. We think we should move the 3:00 – 3:00 times to 2:30 – 3:00. This way, we can have resource to do homework and possibly an extra recess.

Pennies For Patients By: Elly & Jenni

Our School has been doing a fundraiser, it just ended, so the results are in. Our school total was $2497.77. That was way more than our goal, $1500.00. The total for 4th grade was $734.75, 5th grade was $905.69, and the 6th grade got $875.33. We all did a great job! The prize for the top class in the school was a pizza party. The top in 5th grade was Mrs. Ward’s class, with $179.49. The next top grade was 6th grade, Mrs. Fulfer’s, with $228.84. And the winning grade was 4th grade, Mr. Coddington’s class, with $274.51. We all did great. There was also a pennet award, if you got more than $100 than you get a Bronze pennet. That’s Mrs. Ward’s class. If you get $200 or more, you get a silver pennet, which would be Mrs. Fulfer’s class and Mr. Coddington’s class. If you reach $300, (which no one did) then you get gold. All the money goes to Pennies for Patients. The three top classes did also get the traveling trophy in honor as their hard work. The whole school did a nice job and hope we can beat what we got this year for next year.

Birthdays By: Ben

The people who had birthdays where Ben, Carlos, and Ally.
This is what Carlos did on his birthday on March, 17th, 2012. Lost the opie tournament. The score was 38-36. 2 seconds left Carlos shots and he missed by 3 inches, and the other team wins the tournament. He got a smashed trophy.
This is what I did on my birthday on March, 20th, 2012. Ben woke up at 6:30 am. Then opened up presents. The presents were a phone, cash, pokepark2 wonders beyond, and 6 honey buns. A honey bun was my cake. Next I went to school. Then at 11:49 am my class had cupcakes. Next we went to dinner at Apple Bees. Finally I got home and did my homework.
This is Ally’s birthday on March, 23rd, 2012. She went to school. Then had her birthday party. Got presents. The presents were a basketball, shirts, and cash. Used her phone to call her Aunt.

Celebrities By: Maggie & Alex

Hunger Games- The Hunger Games is critiqued as “Better than Twilight and Harry Potter”. When people saw the movie they were expecting more; therefore they were let down and liked the book better. The Hunger Games book/ movie are all about a girl named Katniss Everdeen. She lives in District 12, a poor district that relies on trading to survive. Katniss is a very brave young woman who illegally hunts; she kills animals for meat then sells them and “The Hob” or the market. When the reaping finally arrives she is trying to hide her fear for her little sister Prim who is practically shaking with fear afraid her name will get picked. She does. Katniss volunteers as tribute to go fight for her life in the Hunger Games. Her and her secret “lover boy” Peeta Mellark was the man chosen as tribute. The two travel to the capital by train. Once in the capital they meet all of the other tributes chosen to either win or die. Everything is going fine until they meet the tributes from district 2. District 2 is the wealthiest district next the capital. District 2 trains their kids how to become great warriors in case they were chosen as tribute (which is illegal). They vow to kill each other and that sparks some very juicy rivalry. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens when they finally meet up inside the Hunger Games.

TV Shows By: Megan and Emma

Dancing with the Stars: On the first week of the season, Donald and Peta scored a total of 21: 7,7, and 7. On week 2, he did much better, and moved up with a total score of 24 on the quickstep. Len Goodman, judge, apologized for his poor scoring on the cha cha. On the current week, Donald and Peta did the rumba, scoring a 26.
American Idol: Last week, we said goodbye to Heejun Han. We are at our top 8, and tonight we find out the contestants’ fate. Last night, all of the singers sang hit songs from the 80’s, and for the first night this week, they started to do duets. Some pairings were Colton and Skylar, Hollie and DeAndre, Joshua and Jessica, and Phillip and Elise.
Modern Family: Recently on Modern Family, a new episode “Election Day” is airing on April 11 from 9-9:31 PM on ABC. The entire family is doing a last minute campaigning for Claire which includes Mitch and Cam riding around in a ‘Vote for Claire’ mobile, and Claire does some last-minute interviews but has some technical difficulties.

March Madness By: Charlene

You might’ve thought this was about the actual United States March Madness. You were wrong. This is about the student vs. teacher March madness at our school. Not in our country.

The two players in our class were Kathryn and Ben. The person that would’ve played for Ben if he was not at school was matt. As for Kathryn, Ally was going to play for if she was not at school. Each of them did a very good job in the game.

For that day, there was also a pep band. The total amount of players in the band was 88. Some the songs we played were Louie Louie, let’s go band 2 and victory march. I personally think that the whole pep band did a great job with it.

Altogether, the pep band and the actual basketball players did a great job. The students won against the teachers so, that’s all that matters! :)

NBA By: Jack & Carlos

Around the NBA
After the NBA lockout this offseason, the NBA got off to a great start. Now teams in the Western and Eastern conferences are fighting playoffs spots. The Bucks are in the 9th spot trailing the Knicks in the East and there are 8 playoff teams from each conference. In the West Phoenix is in the 9th spot behind Denver Nuggets. With about 15 games left for most of the teams every team is fighting to get into the playoffs.

The Players
There have been many players excelling this season. In the West he Clippers, Blake Griffin has had many standout dunks. Alongside him Chris Paul who was acquired from the Hornets directly after the offseason and Chauncey Billups tore his ACL. On the Thunder Kevin Durant has been having a great season along with Russsel Westbrook. Durantula and Russel have had two games this season were both of them had 40+ points in a game. Even though the Spurs are old they are playing well. Finally Ricky Rubio had an ACL injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year.
In the East the Bulls and D-Rose have the best record in the league at 42-13. Also the Heat are having a good year but Jack has a feeling that they will not get their championship ring this year either while that’s what Carlos predicts. The Celtics have had a good run since the all-star break and are currently in the 3rd seed in the east. The Bucks have acquired Monta Ellis in a trade for Andrew Bogut, and the first pick in the draft Kyrie Irving is making a case for the ROY trophy.

The Lockout
During the Lockout many veterans relaxed because they could finally have a long offseason, but the younger players such as Kevin Durant and Kevin Love worked hard in the offseason to stay in shape. The NBAPA (NBA players association) and the NBA owners disagreed on the revenue split. The previous deal was in favor of the players 57% to 43% now after this lockout the split is 51-49 in favor of the players. The lockout affected the rookies the most because they hadn’t gotten paid yet and didn’t have a job.

Playoff Preview

We predict that the Eastern Conference Finals will be Chicago v Miami. Jack says it’ll be the Bulls in 7 games and Carlos says it’ll be the Heat in 6 games. In the west we predict the Conference Finals will be OKC v Dallas. Carlos thinks it’ll be the Thunder in 7 and Jack thinks it’ll be the Thunder in 5. Jack’s NBA finals is Bulls v Thunder and the Thunder in 6 games. Carlos’ finals is the Heat against the Thunder. He says the Heat will win in 5 games.

MLB Update By: J.B.

Milwaukee Brewers
The MLB season will start for the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. On Friday the Brewers play St. Louis. Yovani Gallardo will be the starting pitcher for the Brewers and for the Cardinals Jaime Garcia. The Brewers are expecting to have Ryan Braun in 2012. Prince Fielder has been traded to the Detroit Tigers.

Miami Marlins
The Marlins have got a new stadium in Miami and they have an aquarium with real fish in it. The Miami Marlins added a few players that I know of and they are Jose Reyes and a new coach his name is Ozzy Guillen.

L.A. Dodgers
They won 4-1 over the Angels on Tuesday. They are under new ownership to a part owner Magic Johnson. They have recently had their 50th anniversary Kershaw has a 2.45 ERA in five spring starts, 19 hits allowed, 16 strikeouts and eight walks in 22 innings.
