Ancient Egypt Board Games

Students enjoyed creating board games for our social studies unit on Ancient Egypt. Here are a few students playing and evaluating their classmates' games!

October By: Alex

Math
In math so far we have done factor puzzles, area and perimeter, and we just started doing decimal and fraction. From the start and to the end factor puzzles were easy to me. In the area and perimeter unit at first I was awesome with it but in time it started to get really difficult. Lastly the fractions and decimals are easy so far because I already did that unit in my old school.

Reading
In reading we did flaws, realistic and unrealistic, and the antagonist. All the subjects were fun but the flaws unit stumped me. Because not all books I’ve read didn’t tell me the characters flaws. In the realistic and unrealistic unit I was really good at it and it’s probably my favorite unit. Last but not least the antagonist, for me that unit was probably the easiest.

Science
Ahhhh science my favorite subject in school in that we researched biotic and abiotic. Plus we finished with a power point on that unit. I learned a lot in science so far how every living and non loving thing affects each other. The project was fun and I got an A so far I think I’m doing well in science.

October Review By: Jacob

In math we did a project that we had to design a garden/park. I like math is my best and favorite subject.
In social studies we are talking about rivers. It is fascinating.
In science we talked about biomes and we did a project on them. We also talked about ecosystems and how they work.
In language arts we learned how to show not tell and, adding dialogue. It was marvelous fun.
I have fun this month.

October Update By: Kathryn

Language Arts- We’ve been learning about different types of reading strategies. The class practices these strategies by using them as we read independently. Also, we have been working on writing and revising our personal narratives. A personal narrative is a writing piece that is based on an event that has happened to YOU. Mine is written about a family trip for spring break to Florida.

Math- In Mrs. O’Herns room we just got our graded tests back. I was really happy with my grade. We moved on to another lesson, which is long division. I surprisingly enjoy somewhat of math but that’s usually when I understand. 

Science- Particularly in the past few weeks, we have been researching and learning about biomes. Our task was to create a project on a specific biome. I did a Power Point on the tropical rainforest. It was really neat to see other students projects, too.

Social Studies- We have changed gears in S.S. Our class just began the topic of Mesopotamia. I thought it was really interesting to hear about the irrigation systems of times in the past. The Euphrates and Tigris rivers flood at an inconvenient time of crop season. Which is harvest.

October By: Drew & Ben

In the second month of school we learned a lot more.

In math Ben learned about decimals and instead of saying point you say and. In math Drew learned about variables and expressions. It was a tough subject until you figure out that you can do anything to each side of the equation as long as you do it to both sides. He also learned about geometry and probability and percent.

In science Ben did a tropical rain forest to show about different plants and animals and show how much rain falls each year, light, soil, and the temperature. In science we learned mainly about ecology, and a lot about biomes. Drew did a project on the taiga biome, as all of us did a project on a biome. We also learned about the water cycle, carbon cycle, and the nitrogen cycle.

In Reading Workshop we wrote in our response logs. We learned about antagonists, realistic/unrealistic characters, and character flaws. Drew is reading the book FOUND, while Ben is reading the mysterious Benedict Society.

In writing workshop we worked on our personal narratives. Drew is writing about when he went to the principal’s office in preschool, and Ben is writing about Grandma Z. we worked on showing and not telling and dialogue.

In social studies we learned about Mesopotamia and about the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. We learned about Babylon and Assyria. We learned about how they used irrigation to control the flooding and silt so they could grow good crops.

In the month of october in math i learned about geomtre and area and primeter. We did alot of fun actives to do with these subjects. it was really fun leaning about the subjects.

In scoial studys we learned about the egptions and how they live and about egpty. We did a board game about egpty it was really fun to make and to play other peoples bored games . How they desined them and the good fact that they gave out.

I science we learned about the biomes biotic and aibotic. Botic means a living thing and abotic means a nonliving thing. We did a project about the biomes. It was really fun learning about the biomes

In language art we learned about the different reading responses. The readind responses were really fun to respone to. You have read your book for like 10 minutes then you had respone i really like that.

This is the stuff we learned in the month of october.

This month school was actually fun. First we had a party, because we have a baseball chart and we get a baseball when we get an excellent in specials or we are really good in class. Next in social studies we took our test on ancient Egypt. Now we are starting to learn about Mesopotamia and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Then in Math a couple of weeks ago we took the test on perimeter, now we are learning about long division and decimal places.

And in science we had to make a power point to explain a biome. Some examples of biomes are: Taiga, Tundra, savannah, temperate forest and Tropical forest. Next in Language Arts we had to read our independent reading books and then fill out our Journals. In F/CE we are learning how to be a good baby sitter. And that’s what we’re doing in school.

Science- I really enjoy science because of what we do in class. Recently we did reports about biomes (mine was the Tundra biome). I hope we get to do another project like this because it really interest me about learning more about that topic and makes it more fun.
Math- What I learn in math is very confusing. I should have asked questions so I learn more about what we are learning. Not many people enjoy math but we as Americans must learn more, even if we wish not to.
Language Arts- What I am learning in language arts is reading and writing. In writing we are working on our personal narratives. What a personal narrative is is a time in your life that you talk about. In reading we are learning about what are characters do in our books. Our last topic we worked on where or antagonist. An antagonist is a evil or enemy in your book.
Social Studies- I don’t really like social studies because of what we do. what we are learing about is Mesopatamia. Where learning all about their cultures and rivers. The rivers are called the Tigris river and the Ephrates river.

October By: J.B.

In spelling we are learning about changing the noun ending to s, es, change f to a v, drop the y and add ies, don’t change, and change the word. We have learned to use their, there, and they’re, your and you’re, its and it’s and to, too, two right.
In reader’s workshop we learned about foreshadowing, and the anatogonist and some other thing that I can’t remember. We have still been reading for 25 minutes. Now we write a response about what we read and the lesson we learned that day.
I science we finished up the ecosystem and biotic and abiotic factors. We have made a presentation about a biome. There are 7 main biomes they are taiga, tundra, dessert, grassland, tropical and temperate forest. I did the tundra. Then we had to say why Mrs. Fulfer would want to stay there.
In social Studies we finished our board games and took are test on Ancient Egypt. We are starting the Mesopotamia unit. We haven’t done big projects yet, but we have done some sheets of paper.
In math we have took are test on rate and ratio table. In the second unit we learned area and perimeter on a trapezoid and on hexagons, octagons, pentagons, and complex figures. We made a park and had to use the scale one inch is five feet. We took the test on unit two. We are just starting unit three. Which is fractions and decimals.
In language arts we are writing a personal narrative. We added dialog. We did strengthening sentences and show not tell. We are getting close to being done with the personal narrative. I am writing about the time I went to D.C. and puked on myself on a plane.
In band we are working on songs for our concert. We are doing 5 songs that we know of, they are Simple gifts of Christmas, countdown to Christmas, Tango bells, Hanukah celebration and one more.

Review of October By: Greg

-Math -In Mrs. Fulfer’s and Mr. Seyfert’s math class we recently did a project. You had an option of three different projects. There was a fish tank project, a lunch program project, and a flower garden project. I choose the fish tank. We had to find out dimensions of the fish tank. We also needed to buy necessities of a fish tank, fish, and accessories for our fish tank without going over the budget of $200

-Social Studies –In social studies we are learning about Mesopotamia. It is in south western Asia. It is in a land area called the Fertile Crescent. It’s called the Fertile Crescent because of the fertile soil, and it is in a crescent shape. We compared the two rivers in Mesopotamia, the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, to the one in Egypt, the Nile. They had a lot of similarities and differences.

-Science –In Science we were learning about biomes. We had to do a project about them. I did mine on the Taiga. Biomes are different types of environments. What makes the biomes different are the biotic and abiotic factors The Taiga is the largest biome in the world. It is also very cold in the taiga. The word taiga is Russian for cold forest.

-Language Arts –In reading class we get to read for 20 – 30 minutes. After we’re done reading we have to fill out a response log. So far we’ve only done three. One of them was character flaw. A character flaw is something wrong with the character. Another one that I don’t remember the name of is pretty much figuring out who the bad guy is. The last one was deciding if your main character is realistic or not.

October By: Annika & Emma

In math, one of the more important subjects, we learn much. For example in Emma’s math class she just recently learned about fractions and decimals. Though we are in different math classes, we both use websites to help us. Emma uses www.mangahigh.com , while I use www.aleks.com. We both agree however that math can get a bit boring, and tricky at times.
In language arts we have been learning about realistic and non-realistic characters, along with antagonists and protagonists, and also have been learning how to use context clues to figure out what is going on in the story.
In science we recently did research on a specific biome, and then did a presentation on a biome of our choice. Emma did the grassland biome, while I did the tropical rainforest biome. We both got awesome grades, however.
In social studies in our class we are currently learning about Ancient Mesopotomia, and are comparing the climate there to Ancient Egypt.
So far this month was pretty good.

October By: Elly & Charlene

LA- We love to read during LA, because we both like our books (Emily Windsnap and the monster from the deep & My life in pink and green). Lately we’ve been doing WKCE practice tests. That is really boring but we get to read after. We start the testing on November 1st (if we remembered correctly).
Science- Char has presented her science project and she got a great score, but she tried very hard. Elly is going to do hers November 1st, so she hasn’t done hers yet. Char thought it was ok easy\hard. Elly is going to try hard, too. Char did the tropical rainforest and Elly did the Desert.
Social Studies- We already took our test it was easy for us. Char got 94% and Elly got a 101% (there was extra Credit, too). We also finished our game boards and now we’re learning about Mesopotamia. Did you know Mesopotamia is now Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Iraq?
Math- We still have the same math teachers and always will. Char has Mr. Finn (Mrs. Fulfer’s arch enemy) Elly, has Mrs. Fulfer. Char thinks math is easy, and Elly thinks it is ok but kind of fun.
Jazz Lab- WE are both in jazz lab. We both love it and think it is a great opportunity for everyone. Elly plays the trumpet, and Char plays the trombone.

In math, we learned about the formulas for figuring the area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and complex figures. The complex figures were pretty hard because you had to break it down into separate figures and then calculate it.
In social studies we learned about ancient Egypt and how mummies were mummified. To help study for our test on ancient Egypt, we created an ancient Egypt board game in teams. Then, we had to evaluate each member of our team. We also started to learn about Mesopotamia.
We also learned about the different biomes of the world in science. Mrs. Fulfer had a biome contest where we had to research and explain about the biome that we thought Mrs. Fulfer would like to live in. I chose a tropical forest for the biome because I figured Mrs. Fulfer would like the warm weather and cool animal life.
In language arts, we are reading our books and need to fill in a conference log about what we read each day. I think my book is pretty cool.
